100% Preventable: A Professional Warning on the Dangers of Store-Brand Pet Treatments
If you know me, you know I don’t sugarcoat the tough stuff. At Clock’s Timeless Pets, my husband Dale, our Pet Director Jodilyn, and our entire Clock Care Team have made it our mission to treat every animal with the same dignity we give humans at our funeral home. But lately, I’ve been seeing something that breaks my heart because it’s 100% preventable. If we are experiencing this, I’m confident many other pet end-of-life providers, including veterinarians, have as well. Let me be clear: this is not isolated. It is a systemic issue where well-meaning pet parents are led to believe that “cheap and accessible” equals “safe.”
Our business is seeing an influx of pets coming into our care far too soon. The kicker? Their parents are often the most diligent, loving people you’ll ever meet. They thought they were doing the right thing. They went to the big-box store, picked up a flea collar or a “top-rated” shampoo, and settled in thinking their pet was protected.

But here’s the truth: Many well-intended pet parents are unknowingly putting their pets at risk. The High Cost of “Cheap” Protection
I’m a huge advocate for getting the facts before you make a decision. Whether it’s Medicaid planning or pet care, misinformation is expensive—and in this case, it’s deadly.
Many over-the-counter (OTC) products are loaded with older, harsher pesticides that aren’t held to the same safety standards as the ones your vet prescribes. We are talking about chemicals like Organophosphates and Permethrin.
-
Fact: Permethrin is a common ingredient in dog treatments that is lethal to cats. If your cat rubs up against your dog after a “bargain” treatment, it can trigger life-threatening seizures.
-
Fact: These products can cause “sludge” reactions—excessive drooling, tremors, and respiratory distress—that can end in a trip to our facility instead of a walk in the park.
Let’s Break the Cycle
We need to stop thinking of flea and tick prevention as a “grocery store item” and start treating it like the medical decision it is.
-
Stop the “Bargain” Hunt: That $10 collar isn’t a deal if it leads to a $1,000 emergency vet bill—or worse, a final goodbye.
-
Call Our Local Vets: We are so lucky in Muskegon to have incredible veterinarians. Use them. They know your pet’s weight and health history. They aren’t just selling you a box; they are prescribing a safety net.
-
Read the Labels: If you can’t pronounce it, or if it doesn’t say “Vet Approved,” put it back on the shelf.
Why I’m Sharing This
At Clock Timeless Pets, our motto is Unconditional Care. Usually, that applies to the aftercare we provide, but I believe care starts with education while your pet is still healthy and wagging their tail.
Our care team doesn’t want to meet you because of a flea collar mistake. We want you to have years and years of memories first. Let’s lead with facts, not “well-intended misinformation.”
Do your pet a favor: Toss the store-brand chemicals and call your vet today.
